waiting on the world to change

Since I watched Susan Cain’s TED Talk “The Power Of Introverts”, and have been reading her book, “Quiet“, I’ve been thinking about writing a book of my own about Introverts.

It seems that society today is dominated by “personalities” – charismatic people who are quick thinking and fast talking. But are these necessarily the right sort of people to be in charge of our future?

In the aftermath of so many financial scandals and dubious policy decisions, I wonder whether the world is ready for a change. And I wonder, also, whether it might be the Introvert leaders in business who will bring about this change? (You can read my views on Leadership and Ego here)

“Waiting On The World To Change” – John Mayer

Me and all my friends
We’re all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and
There’s no way we ever could

Now we see everything that’s going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don’t have the means
To rise above and beat it

So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

It’s hard to beat the system
When we’re standing at a distance
So we keep waiting
Waiting on the world to change

Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They would have never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on their door
And when you trust your television
What you get is what you got
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want

That’s why we’re waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

It’s not that we don’t care,
We just know that the fight ain’t fair
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

And we’re still waiting
Waiting on the world to change
We keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
One day our generation
Is gonna rule the population
So we keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

We keep on waiting
Waiting on the world to change

I think change is desperately needed, and hope it’s coming. And I agree that what we need is not people who talk a good game but have no substance, but rather people who have the right stuff on the inside, like principles and vision and compassion. Perhaps, indeed, that maps better to introverts than extroverts. Hopefully good character will come forth from all personality types and it will be a team effort!

I agree, Tim – ideally we need a good team which comprises both introverts and extroverts. My feeling is that, perhaps, extroverts need to learn from introverts how to become better listeners and take a more balanced view – while introverts need to learn from extroverts how to have the courage of their convictions and be prepared to stand up for what they believe in.
