This weekend I joined my friends Beverley Glick and Sarah Maliphant and three other women for a Story Wisdom Retreat at a farmhouse in Capel-y-ffin, in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. I’m not used to spending the weekend with strangers or with friends, so I was a little nervous at first – especially as the farmhouse was quite remote, with no mobile signal or wifi!

I need not have worried, though. Everyone was very friendly, including the two cats, Bertie and Miss Bertie Junior (who are not related but look identical). While Beverley encouraged us to share our stories, Sarah took us for walks in the hills, and fed us wonderfully tasty meals and cake. And the scenery was stunning – even though we couldn’t see much of it through the rain on the first day.

On Sunday a few of us walked down to St Mary’s Chapel, a tiny church filled with teddy bears. It was nice and cosy inside, so we stayed for the service – there were only seven of us in total, and we filled the pews.

While at the farmhouse, I filmed a few scenes from the retreat, as well as testimonials from the attendees, which I’ve edited into a promotional video for future Story Wisdom Retreats.

Update: In 2016 Sarah bought the farm next door, where she hosts a variety of Welsh Mountain Retreats, as well as continuing to co-host the Story Wisdom Retreat with Beverley.

  1. Hi Julia, this looks really good and I shall be Googling it in a mo! Your film was really good too. Have you heard of Arvon? They do writing courses also set in remote locations. I went on one in 2004 and I agree about it being strange living with a bunch of strangers! But the bonding and experience of it I will cherish forever! X

Hi Julia! Sorry I didn’t respond sooner – I’ve been away from the blog for a while, and have only just spotted your comment. I have heard of Arvon and have thought about attending one of their retreats before, but always felt they might be a bit too remote!
