The Shard, in London, was the tallest building in Europe when it was built in 2012, but the title was soon overtaken by a residential tower block in Moscow. It dominates the skyline on the south bank of the River Thames – far away from the Gherkin, Cheesegrater and Walkie Talkie towers in the City of London.

Its design is elegant, unlike the rather odd shapes of other London tower buildings – and The View from The Shard is said to be second to none. As yet, I haven’t been to the top of the Shard – perhaps next year…
