Day 16: Breathe
“May your love for me be like the scent of the evening sea drifting in through a quiet window
so I do not have to run or chase or fall… to feel you all I have to do is breathe.”
~ Sanober Khan: A Thousand Flamingos
Day 17: Bedroom window
The view from the bedroom window is uninspiring – so around 20 years ago I painted a view through French windows onto the doors of the built-in wardrobe, using match pots and a sponge.
To this day, seeing that blue sky over the hills cheers me up on a dull morning!
Day 18: 5 years ago
5 years ago I travelled to Lough Erne, in Northern Ireland, to attend a training course which ended up being a disaster – but that’s another story.
I was to meet a man and a woman at Belfast airport, and we would get a ride together for the 2 hour car journey to Lough Erne. It was my first trip on my own for around 10 years, and there were some key things I forgot to note:
- there are 2 airports in Belfast – my fellow students would arrive at the other one.
- the surnames of my two colleagues, and how to pronounce the woman’s first name.
- their mobile phone numbers.
- who was picking us up from the airport, where and when.
It all worked out though – after about half an hour, wandering through the airport asking various women “is your name …?” hoping I had pronounced it properly, and finding out how hideously expensive it would be to get a taxi to Lough Erne by myself, I came across the car purely by accident.
The man had cancelled, as it happens, but I recognised the woman and realised I hadn’t taken to her when I first met her, so I wasn’t looking forward to spending 2 hours with her. We got talking though, and actually got on really well – and when we arrived at Lough Erne, I confessed about my initial trepidation, and said how enjoyable the journey had been.
We are still good friends today!
Day 19: My hands
When I’m painting, I wear vinyl gloves to protect my hands – otherwise I would never get the paint off, and I would end up as a walking piece of abstract art!
Day 20: Clouds
“Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way.”
~ Joni Mitchell – Both Sides, Now
